I think that this terminology is useful.  A "link" is as defined in 
rfc2461 - "a communication facility or medium over which nodes can 
communicate at the link layer".  This is equivalent to what I think 
JinHyeock refers to as an L3 link.

A "point of attachment" might be a particular access point in 802.11b 
(or even a specific VLAN via that access point) or a port on an Ethernet 
switch and covers that concept decscribed by what I think JinHyeock 
refers to as an L2 link.

Thus a link-layer hint might indicate an attachment point change that 
may or may not correspond to a link change.
